History

Fiscardo is one of the finest harbors in Greece. Prehistoric graves testify that lived here since forty thousands (40,000) years. It was well known as a port of the Roman period under the name "Panormos". In 1084 Robert Guiscard, Lord of Calabria and Apulia in Southern Italy won between Kefalonia and Corfu the united fleets of the Venetians and Byzantines, attempting to occupy the island of Kefalonia without success. He died on his ship on June 17, 1085 when it was docked in the port of Panormos, leaving his memory name, which has since called Fiscardo (after a small alteration Guiscard - Piskardo - Fiscardo).

The earthquakes in Kefalonia at 1953 literally razed what it had left behind intact the 2nd World War and the Civil War. Most houses of Kefalonia were completely destroyed, the dead were hundreds and injured even more. But Fiscardo survived and is now one of the most beautiful traditional village and one of the most dynamic tourist areas of Greece.

Venetian Lighthouse Venetian Lighthouse

Venetian Lighthouse

The old Venetian lighthouse was built in the 16th century, the cylindrical tower which looks like the shape of an ancient column. All around the lighthouse is fenced with stones about 2 meters height and inside there is a house for the lighthouse keepers which today is abandoned, unattended and in bad condition. The importance of this lighthouse, (the time of Venetian occupation) was great due to the port of Fiscardo. The inland port is too narrow for large vessels, but the depth is sufficient. There were small fleet of Venetian ships that found good anchorage SW of Lighthouse. Fiscardo was the main export port for the whole region Erisos, from where he loaded all products (raisins, wine, oil, etc)...

New Stone Lighthouse

The new stone lighthouse was built in 1892 and located north of the island of Kefalonia. After the earthquake of 1953, the lighthouse was abandoned and was built again with a new square tower 14.2 m. height and of focal height plane 28 meters. So today it is the only case in Greece, where we meet in the same place two structures of lighthouses.

Roman Cemetery In Fiscardo

The Roman cemetery in Fiscardo was located in 1993 during excavation works for the execution of a public utility project, under the responsibility of archaeologist A. Sotiriou, which lasted until 1997 with long breaks. It dates back to the first Christian centuries (2nd to 4th AD), and a total of 47 tombs were surveyed and classified into the following categories:

Tile-roofing: Inside a pit, the dead is laid on a tile layer and covered again with tiles and earth

Injections: These are large and utilitarian vases in which infants or young children are usually buried

Built-in boxes: Tombs are built and are rectangular in shape. Inside, usually a built-in cushion is built.

Monumental construction: An arched tomb is raised on a stepped base, while on a narrow side they have an entrance with a stone door

Sarcophagus: Monolithic burial monuments. In graveside enclosures, among others, two sarcophagi whose faces have been carved with reliefs related to the Underworld have been investigated. Typical is the representation of Persephone's rapture. Artemis and Athena chase Pluto, the God of Hades, appearing on a chariot holding Persephone from the middle. The sarcophagi, the built-in boxes and the monumental tombs, due to their costly design and the rich possessions they contained, are believed to belong to people who during their lifetime were distinguished for their financial strength. The cemetery according to the indications continues below the road and extends to the surrounding plots.

Architecture

Altogether 51 tombs dating from the 2nd to the 4th AD were investigated. and ranked in the following categories:

  • 13 overhangs, built-in boxes of graves. Their four sides protrude to the ground and are built according to its technical opus incertum or opus testaceum.
  • 17 Boxes encased in rectangular pits, open into the natural loop.
  • 3 small monuments, rising to a stone-built base. These graves do not save all of their superstructure, but they are supposed to be vaulted. Its arch is not completed but interrupted and completed with a flat roof, formed by large rectangular stone slabs.
  • 5 tiled roofs whose floor and cover are made of tiles.
  • 2 pits, one of which was incomplete and the other was roughly bent. He was buried on a wooden stretcher.
  • 7 injections. Inside large pots, mainly amphoras, infants and young children were buried.
  • 4 sarcophagi, of which only two were found by "country". These are monolithic burial monuments with stone gables. One of them is attributed to a woman's lying figure, but it is not entirely saved. Typical is the representation of Persephone's capture. In the main face of the sarcophagus are depicted from the left to the right Artemis and Athena chasing Pluto, the god of Hades, who appears on a chariot pulling Persephone from the middle of her back.

From the total of the tombs, ten (10) are placed in a funerary precinct and three (3) of which the (two sarcophagi), inside a burial chamber - mausoleum. The mausoleum, as far as its plan is concerned, is ranked in the form of the crowds. They consist of a short antechamber and the main burial chamber.

Grave Customs

At burial they placed various loved objects of the dead - gifts:

  • Glass and clay pots (tears, drinking pots, wine glasses, etc.)
  • Beauty items such as gold, bronze and bone jewelry (rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, pins, bronze mirrors, etc.), and iron splines, associated with sporting activities.
  • The copper coin (mainly copper coins and golden daans), placed in the palm or in the dead man's mouth, was necessary for the soul to pay for the boatman who would take it to the Lower World. It was also necessary for the lamps to illuminate the path of the soul in the Lower World.

The tombs were family-like as found by skeletal remains. The relics are almost standard and the ossuaries are not missing, and there is also a dog burial, possibly accompanying the owner. The death of dead offerings is confirmed by the presence of holes for funerary covers, but also the fragments of lamps around the graves. Also from food debris and scraps of tableware, outside and around the graves, the slaughter of the dead is certified.

Nikos Kavadias

Nikos Kavvadias, born on 11 January 1910 in Harbin, Manchuria. His father, Charilaos Kavvadias, had Russian citizenship and maintained an import - export business supplier of the Tsarist Army and his mother, Dorothea Agelatou, of the well - known Kefalonia shipowners' family. In 1914, with the outbreak of the war, the family came to Greece and settled in Kefallonia, and the father returned to his operations in Russia, where it was destroyed economically. He returns to Greece in 1921. The young Nikos already shows his talent by publishing a school magazine called "School Satyr". When he graduates, he works at a naval office in Piraeus, but he does not suit him as a profession and barks as a sailor on a cargo ship.

He begins to publish his poems early in various literary magazines, but his formal entry into Greek letters made it in 1933 with his poetic collection "Marabou". In 1939 he received the diploma of the radio broadcaster, but the war broke him and he was taken to the Albanian front. With the end of the war it barks like a radio operator and travels constantly. During this period from 1954 until 1974, the most important events in the life of the poet concern the death of his younger brother, Argyris, in 1957, the circulation of "Vardias" in French in 1959, the re-issue of " Marabou "and" Poussi "in 1961, his mother's death in 1965 and the birth of Philip in 1966, the son of Elgas's niece, when health problems force him to stop traveling. Just after three months on land, dying in 1975, from stroke.

The popularity of Kavvadias and his work skyrocketed in the 80's with the first melodies of his poems with Thanos Mikroutsikos's "Cross of the South". They followed "The Horizons" by the same composer and until now he is one of the most beloved Greek poets.
